Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Ethical journalism is a cornerstone of responsible media practice, ensuring that the public is provided with accurate, fair, and balanced information. In Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Warji Local Government Area in Bauchi State, community radio plays an essential role in disseminating news and information, fostering social cohesion, and promoting accountability. However, despite the vital role of community radio in shaping public discourse, challenges such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and pressure from political and commercial interests often undermine the ethical standards of journalism. This study aims to explore the role of community radio in promoting ethical journalism in Warji, examining how these radio stations adhere to ethical standards in their reporting, how they train their staff, and how they foster trust and credibility among their audiences. Furthermore, it will investigate the challenges faced by community radio in promoting ethical journalism and explore strategies that could enhance their capacity to uphold journalistic ethics in their programming.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Community radio stations in rural areas like Warji face significant challenges in maintaining ethical journalism standards due to limited resources, lack of professional training for journalists, and political interference. Despite these challenges, community radio remains a trusted source of information for many residents, especially in rural areas where access to mainstream media is limited. However, there is limited research on the role of community radio in promoting ethical journalism practices in Warji, as well as the barriers that prevent these stations from fully adhering to ethical standards. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring how community radio stations in Warji promote ethical journalism and the challenges they face in doing so.

Furthermore, the study could offer practical recommendations for community radio stations to enhance their ethical practices and provide more accurate and reliable information to their audiences.
